No hot water or water not getting hot enough
Common Causes
- Failed thermocouple or thermopile (gas water heaters) — most common failure
- Burned-out heating element (electric water heaters)
- Sediment buildup reducing efficiency (very common with hard Central AB water)
- Failed gas valve
- Tripped high-limit switch
- Tank has reached end of life (avg 10-13 years in Innisfail hard water conditions)
Licensed professional required. Do not attempt this yourself — improper work can cause injury, property damage, or void your insurance.
When to Call a Pro
- Pilot light will not stay lit after three attempts
- You smell gas near the water heater
- There is water pooling around the base of the tank (tank failure — replace immediately)
- Tank is over 12 years old and losing performance
- Rumbling or popping sounds from the tank (severe sediment buildup)
Alberta Gas Fitting Regulations
All gas line and appliance work in Alberta must be performed by a holder of a valid Gas Fitting Certificate issued under the Safety Codes Act. Unlicensed gas work is illegal and voids home insurance.
As ticketed journeyperson plumbers, we hold gas fitting certification — one call covers both trades. We serve Innisfail, Red Deer County, and all of Central Alberta.
Permit required. This work requires a Safety Codes permit in Alberta. We handle all permit applications and inspections on your behalf.
Alberta Context
Hard water in Innisfail (140-200 mg/L hardness) accelerates sediment buildup and shortens tank life. Without a water softener, expect 8-11 years from a standard tank water heater rather than the rated 12-15 years. Flushing the tank annually (draining 2-3 gallons to clear sediment) can extend life. Gas water heater repairs and replacements require a licensed gas fitter in Alberta.
