Residential Drain Lines

Drain lines are the invisible infrastructure of a plumbing system — they work silently until they don't. In older Central Alberta homes, cast iron and clay drain lines are common and are often reaching the end of their service life.

Typical Lifespan Cast iron: 50-100 years | Clay: 50-100 years | ABS plastic: 50+ years

Repair or Replace?

Localized issues (a cracked section or root intrusion at a joint) can be repaired or lined. Widespread deterioration or multiple failure points points to replacement.

Cast Iron and Clay Drains

Cast iron drains corrode from the inside over decades — the smooth interior becomes rough, accumulating grease and causing slow drains. The joints between sections are vulnerable to root intrusion. A camera inspection is the only definitive way to see what's happening inside the line.

Root Intrusion

Tree roots grow toward moisture and can enter drain pipes through hairline cracks at joints. Once inside, roots grow and eventually block the line. Roots grow back after clearing unless the pipe is repaired or lined. Large trees within 15 feet of drain lines are worth monitoring.

Camera Inspection

A drain camera shows the interior condition, identifies crack locations, root intrusion points, and any bellied sections (low spots where water pools). A camera inspection before buying an older home is strongly recommended. It's also useful when recurring blockages can't be cleared with standard snake equipment.

Common Questions

How do I clear a blocked main drain?

A main drain blockage affects multiple fixtures at once. A standard drain snake can clear most blockages — the snake is fed through the main cleanout or a toilet. For roots or hardened grease, hydro-jetting (high-pressure water) is more effective. Call a plumber for main drain blockages — using a DIY snake incorrectly on a clay or cracked pipe can cause damage.
